Guidelines for overseas and non-British applicants
The following is brief advice about your right to work in the UK, if you need further information please follow the links indicated or contact the appropriate personnel department. Can I work in the UK?
If you are a:
- British citizen;
- Commonwealth citizen with the right of abode; or a
- Family member of a national from a European Economic Area country or Switzerland, who is lawfully residing in the UK.

Am I a national of the European Economic Area (EEA)?
You are a national of the EEA if you are a national of one of the following countries.

Greece Hungary Iceland Ireland Italy Latvia Liechtenstein Lithuania Luxembourg |
Malta Netherlands Norway Poland Portugal Slovakia Slovenia Spain Sweden |
Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway are not members of the European Union (EU). However, the European Economic Area Agreement gave nationals of these countries the same rights to enter, live in and work in the United Kingdom as EU citizens.
I am a national of the European Economic Area what rights do I have if I want to work in the United Kingdom?
You can:
- accept offers of work;
- work (whether as an employee, in self-employment or in business);
- set up a business;
- manage a company; or
- set up a local branch of a company.
You do not need a work permit but if you are from
- Lithuania
- Estonia
- Latvia
- Sloveni
- Slovakia
- Hungary
- Czech Republic
you may need to register as a worker under the Workers Registration Scheme.

I am a Swiss national what rights do I have?
You will have the same rights as EEA Nationals.
- You can use the EU/EEA channel when you enter the United Kingdom
- You can work in the United Kingdom without requiring a work permit
- You can apply for a residence permit to show that you have a right to live in the United Kingdom.
- Your family members may be entitled to live with you in the United Kingdom.
I am not a national of the European Economic Area, what do I do?
If you are a foreign national and you want to work for us you will need ‘Limited Leave to Remain'.

If you already living in the UK you can check if you are allowed to work by looking at the stamp in your passport. Examples of passport stamps can be found on the Immigration and Nationality Directorate website.
OR
If you are currently outside the United Kingdom, you may need to apply for entry clearance before you travel and register with the police when you arrive.
Entry clearance is now mandatory for nationals of the following countries who intend to stay in the UK for longer than six months: Australia, Canada, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea and the USA.
In addition all UK Work Permit holders, except British Nationals without Right of Abode, staying for more than six months will require entry clearance.
